Heru (ornamental Maori comb) were traditionally used by menfolk to fasten their long hair, which was oiled and sometimes braided, up into topknots and often augmented with feathers. Heru indicated the rank of the wearer, and were usually carved from wood or whale bone.

This Heru is approximately 145mm long and features a shapely Rimu veneerboard body with head portion decorated BOTH SIDES with paua inlayed koru design.
